Thursday Night Lecture Series

Sept. 24 – Laura Tennant & Jack Fulmar, Local Historians: Laura Tennant, editor of the Dayton Courier for more than 20 years, is founder of the Dayton Museum. Partnering with Jack Fulmar, a Dayton historian, the pair wrote Dayton: Images of America which is a pictorial history of Dayton, Nevada’s first settlement.

Oct. 1 – Chris Bayer, Expert of Banjo:  Bayer is an on old-time Nevada music expert and writer of THE STRYCHNINE BANJO. His presentation on 19th century banjo is paired with a book signing.

Oct. 8 – Joe Curtis, Firefighting on the Comstock:  Curtis, executive director of the Storey County Volunteer Fire Department, has 43 years experience in fire service. He serves as Storey County’s emergency management director and owns and operates “On the Side,” a graphics and sign company in Virginia City.

Oct. 15 – Tony Argento, Cowboy Poetry:  Cowboy poet, humorist, story teller, historian and entertainer, Argento tells tales of “cowboy poetry at its best” like his granddad, the man who inspired him.

Oct. 22 – Steve Hale, Chautauqua Performances:  Hale’s Chautauqua presentation features Lake Tahoe historical figures including John “Snowshoe” Thompson, the 19th century mailman of the Sierra; George Whittell, Jr., the playboy millionaire who built The Thunderbird Lodge; and Dr. James E. Church, father of snow survey science.

Each year, the Gold Hill Hotel hosts a series of fascinating and informative lectures on Thursday nights with subjects ranging from iconic characters of the Comstock to presentations on the paranormal, to “The History Of Whistling”, these “dinner and a show” events are a highlight of the week.
