DESCRIPTION:Lecture Series Continues – Thursday\, November 7th with Dorothea Phelan – “Louise MacKay” a Chautauqua Performance \nWe are pleased to continue the 2024 Lecture Series at the Gold Hill Hotel! \nDinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nLOUISE MACKEY  \nDorothea is currently performing as “Louise Mackey”\, Wife of John Mackay the Bonanza King of Virginia City. \nLouise Mackey was the daughter of a barber and a seamstress in New york.  She longed to grow up and become a Society Lady like one of her mother’s wealthy clients. \nHer family came to the Gold Country of Calif. and then on to Nevada. \nHer story of abandonment\, widowhood\, the loss of a baby and the crippling of  a second daughter found her in poverty in Virginia City. \nShe meets and marries \,John Makey \,and up an coming miner in Virginia City .After years of working he and his partner\, Jim Fair hit the Big Bonanza–the largest deposit of silver ore in the world !Her story is how she achieves her goal and becomes the “Hostess”  with  the Mostess “in International society  and remains a  fine likeable woman in her own right. \nBIO:   \nDorothea Phelan has been an historian\, writer\, researcher\, story tell and living history performer for over 25 years. \nShe was born and grew up in Yerington  where she did “play acting” and performing in neighborhood theatricals. Later became a Drama Coach for children’s plays. \nAfter many years in So. Calif\, widowhood \,and children grown and out on their own \,she used her talents working in Museums and Historical Societies there. She returned to Carson City  four years ago and has been involved as a volunteer at the Nevada State Museum and she i s a Chautauqua Player at the Dangberg Ranch Historical Park. \nFor over 20 years she was an active member and performer in a Women Of The Bible Repertory Group. \nLecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $10 per person. \nCome early and enjoy dinner before the lecture! DESCRIPTION:Lecture Series Continues – 2024! “Comstock – Then and Now Part 3” by Joe Curtis & Ron Gallagher \nThis is the conclusion of an amazing series of lectures by Joe Curtis! \nThursday\, November 14th lecture will be Joe Curtis & Ron Gallagher (if health allows) on: “Comstock – Then and Now” – the finale! \nDinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nJoe and Ron are back by popular demand to continue their series capturing the Comstock as it has changed through time. This exciting lecture will give you a presentation and photos of the Comstock from the past and contrast them with current pictures of the same locations!  The Ron and Joe Show will be featuring never before seen photos; contrasting the mining history of the Comstock with the more modern tourist-based Virginia City and surrounding area. \nIncluding plenty of photos of an earlier period of VC history.  Even though this is a stand alone presentation\, Joe and Ron will have all new content so if you were present at previous lectures\, you don’t want to miss the continuation! \nBio: Joe Curtis\nJoe’s family moved to VC in 1958.  They bought a building and opened a museum dedicated to the history of life on the Comstock.  He grew up amidst the museum and became infatuated with the history of the Comstock and began collecting old photos of the area back in the day. \nBio: Ron Gallagher\nRon is a well know local aged artifact of the Comstock.  Raised here\, lots of relatives dating well into the lower 1800’s and a head full of Comstock knowledge\, recollections. stories and other associated Comstock BS. \nLecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $10 per person. \nCome early and enjoy dinner before the lecture!
