DESCRIPTION:The Theatre Returns to the Gold Hill Hotel!  As part of our Lecture/ Entertainment Series – 2022 “A Woman by Design” – A Play about the Life and Times of Mary Colter! \nSunday\, October 16th – Show starts at 3:00 p.m. promptly\, doors open at 2:30 p.m. \nDinner starts at about 4:30 p.m.\, immediately after the show.  We are having a beautiful buffet style dinner with our most popular dinner items including Crown Point Chicken and Miner’s Tri-tip Angus Steak.  Dinner will also include salad\, grilled vegetables\, and garlic mashed potatoes. \n“A Woman by Design\,” a play about the life and times of architect and designer\, Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter will debut at the Gold Hill Hotel on Sunday\, October 16th\, 2022 at 3:00 PM. There will be only one performance and you will not want to miss it! This 90-minute one-woman play is based on the life and times of Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter\, chief architect and designer of many landmark buildings and public spaces for the Fred Harvey Company and the Santa Fe Railroad\, notably in the Grand Canyon National Park. \nHer work had enormous influence as she helped to create a style\, working in rugged conditions\, blending Spanish and Mission Revival architecture with Native American designs\, now viewed as pivotal in the development of Southwestern architecture. \nFeatured in the title role is Elizabeth Ware\, a professional actress well known for her solo performances and her husband\, David Edgecombe\, who produced the play. They bring a unique perspective to this timeless story of a woman struggling to establish herself in the male-dominated world of early twentieth century architecture. Ware portrays Colter at three life stages: an uncertain young art student\, a self-taught architect\, and as an 88-year-old woman facing the sale or destruction of some of her major projects. “A Woman by Design” is a fascinating character study of a strong-willed woman who was inspired by an artistic passion that drove her ‘not to overpower nature\,’ but to become a kind of interpreter.” Review of Navajo-Hopi Observer\, originally published April 5\, 2017 at its debut at La Posada Hotel. \nDoors open at 2:30 p.m. and costs $55 per person (tax included) for Dinner and the Show\, $25 for Show only tickets.  Please tip your server as gratuity is not included.  Hotel rooms are not included and are limited\, call 775-847-0111 to book a room for the evening. \nWe have a limited amount of these tickets!  Sign up early!! \nPlease click the button below to buy your tickets for this exciting evening: \nGet Tickets

Some are told by well-known Nevadans\, such as Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain)\, Robert Laxalt\, and former governors Bob List and Richard Bryan\, but much more of the book shows ordinary Nevadans celebrating in diverse ways the wonders of the season. The range of the state’s ethnic and immigrant heritage is showcased by stories of Basque\, Mexican American\, Native American\, and African American celebrations\, along with traditions of Italian\, German\, Danish\, and Serbian origin. Some of the more unusual accounts include the story of three miners trapped underground for forty-five days during the Christmas season\, Tonopah’s “Nevergreen” tree\, and Reno’s Santa Pub Crawl with thousands of costumed revelers. Through extensive research and personal interviews\, Patricia D. Cafferata has created a heartwarming collection of stories\, guaranteed to be treasured. Whether Santa arrives on a sleigh in a mining camp in Silver Peak\, Esmeralda County\, or a zip line down Fremont Street\, Las Vegas\, Christmas in Nevada brings warm memories\, excitement\, and good cheer. \nBio: \nAuthor\, historian\, and attorney\, Patty Cafferata is a life-long resident of Reno\, Nevada. Her background includes a diverse career in the law and politics. The first political office she served in was the Nevada Assembly. In 1982\, when she was elected Nevada State Treasurer\, she became the first woman elected to any constitutional office in the state. Cafferata has also served as district attorney of Lincoln\, Lander and Esmeralda counties at different times.  \nCafferata wrote and published nine books on Nevada history\, including the University of Nevada Press’ book Christmas in Nevada\, a history of how Nevadans have and continue to celebrate the holiday.
