SUMMARY:Final Lecture of the Season! Gregory Crouch with "The Bonanza King" - John Mackay - Sold Out!
DESCRIPTION:This will be the final lecture of the 2018 Season with the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture! \nThursday\, November 29th lecture will be Gregory Crouch with:  “The Bonanza King” – John Mackay\n \n  \n** This lecture is sold out!  Sorry\, we cannot take anymore reservations ** \n  \nDinner starts at 5:00 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nIn his talk\, Gregory Crouch will discuss local-legend John Mackay\, who got his start in the United States as a destitute Irish immigrant brought here when he was 9 years old. Mackay grew up in New York City’s Five Points slum (“The Gangs of New York neighborhood)\, came of age amid the violent mayhem of the California Gold Rush\, and rose to the full power of his manhood in the deep\, rich\, and outrageously dangerous mines of the Comstock Lode beneath Virginia City and Gold Hill\, Nevada\, the ultimate Old West boomtowns. \nOn the Comstock\, Mackay worked his way up from nothing\, battling the pernicious “Bank Ring” of California capitalists who’d monopolized the lode\, and struck the legendary Big Bonanza\, a stupendously valuable body of gold and silver ore buried 1\,500 feet below the center of the town. \nThe extraordinary wealth Mackay extracted from the Comstock Lode drove wild stock market frenzies in San Francisco and launched his wife\, whose beginnings were every bit as humble as his own\, on a meteoric social career among the finest European aristocrats. When John Mackay died in 1902—with a personal fortune equivalent to about $50 billion modern dollars—front page obituaries all over Europe and the United States hailed him as one of the most admired Americans of the age. \nSpeaker/ Bio:  Gregory Crouch is an author who specializes in adventurous and historic subjects. He has five major books in publication. \nHe has published stores in The Atlantic\, National Geographic\, National Geographic Adventure\, Smithsonian\, Time\, American History\, World War II\, Islands\, Outside\, Popular Mechanics\, Backpacker\, and many other national and regional media\, and dozens of adventure stories for Rock & Ice\, Ascent\, Alpinist\, and Climbing. \nIn 1988\, Gregory Crouch graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point\, New York\, where he studied military history. \nHe lives in Walnut Creek\, in the San Francisco Bay Area of California.

SUMMARY:Lecture Series Continues! "The Great Flume Ride" by Tony Ilradi
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to continue our 2018 Lecture Series with the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture! \nThursday\, November 15th lecture will be Tony Ilradi on:  “The Great Flume Ride”\n \nDinner starts at 5:00 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nIn 1875\, an East Coast newspaperman was treated to the trip of a lifetime. H.J. Ramsdell\, a New York Tribune reporter\, was assigned to Virginia City to report on the Comstock. He got more of a story than he bargained for. \nWhile touring the various mining works\, mining magnate John Mackay suggested Ramsdell visit to his company’s flume. Two days later\, Ramsdell met with Mackay’s partners\, James Fair and James Flood\, in Virginia City. Joining them on the trip was John Hereford\, the contractor who built the big flume. Flood and Fair challenged Ramsdell to join them for a ride down the flume by hog trough. Hog troughs were crude boats\, V-shaped like the flume and 16 feet long. The 200-pound reporter could not believe what he was hearing\, but he thought\, “If men worth 25 to 30 million dollars apiece could afford to risk their lives\, I could afford to risk mine which is not worth half as much.” For a bit of comfort\, two small boards were installed as seats. \nOne experienced flume shooter warned\, “A flume has no element of safety. You cannot stop\, you cannot lessen your speed; you have only to sit still\, shut your eyes\, say your prayers\, take all the water that comes…and wait for eternity.” \nReporter Ramsdell was able to write a good story\, but his main satisfaction came from the fact that his wealthy hosts were so battered and sore\, they could not get out of bed the next day. \nBio: \nTony Ilradi is a historian\, lecturer\, cowboy poet\, musician who has entertained folks across the nation for over 25 years. And\, a former employee of Sierra Pacific Power / NV Energy before that. \nLecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $5 per person. \nCome early and enjoy dinner before the lecture! We Serve dinner before the lecture at 5\, 5:30\, & 6 p.m. \nPlease fill out this reservation form to sign up for this exciting lecture: \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nName:\n\n\n\nEmail Address:\n\n\n\nDinner and Lecture or Lecture only?\n Dinner and Lecture\n Lecture only\n\n\nHow many in your party?\n\n\n\nIf you are coming to the dinner and Lecture\, what time would you like to dine with us?\n 5:00 p.m.\n 5:30 p.m.\n 6:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Lecture series continues! Cliff Jennings with "Mysteries of the Hale & Norcross Mine: Waste Trestles\, Bins & Dumps"
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to continue our 2018 Lecture Series with the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture! \nThursday\, October 4th lecture will be Cliff Jennings on:  “Mysteries of the Hale & Norcross Mine: Waste Trestles\, Bins & Dumps”\nA Story of Site Observations\, Model Making and Comstock-V&T History\n \nDinner starts at 5:00 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nLecture Description:\nIn its heyday\, the Comstock’s major mines were visually dominant and architecturally striking. But when one attempts to make a scale model of one\, questions emerge that drives one to research. Archival photos and drawings are crucial\, and site investigations gives clarity. But once in a while\, one ends up with a bigger stack of questions then at the start. \nThis is a story of one such mine\, and the attempt to research and model it: The Hale & Norcross\, ca. 1890. It is also a story of observations on the ground and from the air; over the Internet and via email. All will help in understanding the structure and making a model of them. And during the process\, a story will emerge of a mysterious little shed whose remains still reside on an man-made hilltop in Virginia City\, Nevada. \nLecturer Bio: \nCliff Jennings is a mechanical designer living in Maryland. Raised in California and about ten years ago\, his interest returned to Comstock mining and the V&T Railroad. His hobby has become his passion with a mix of model railroading\, V&T history and the research and modeling of Comtock mines in their prime. \nLecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $5 per person. \nCome early and enjoy dinner before the lecture! SUMMARY:Lecture series Continues! "Camels on the Comstock" by Eric Moody
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to continue our 2018 Lecture Series with the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture! \nThursday\, August 16th lecture will be Eric Moody on:  “The Virginia City-Austin Camel Freight Business of the 1860s” \nDinner starts at 5:00 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nLecture Description:   \nJust about everyone who’s been in Nevada for a while is aware that camels were used here in the nineteenth century as beasts of burden. Mostly they were seen in and around Virginia City and the other communities of the Comstock during the 1860s and 1870s.  It’s also pretty well known that the 1875 state legislature passed a law prohibiting camels from the main streets of towns because they spooked horses. \nLess well known is the story of the camels’ use in the major freighting business that developed between Virginia City and Austin in central Nevada in the early 1860’s.  Austin was the most important mining center outside the Comstock\, and between 1863 and 1869\, when the transcontinental railroad extended its tracks across the state\, great quantities of goods were hauled eastward to Austin and its neighboring mining camps – and tons of salt were carried westward for use in the Comstock mills. The hauling was done by freight wagons\, stage coaches\, and pack trains of mules\, burros – and camels. \nThis illustrated presentation takes a look at the Comstock-Austin camel freighting activity of the 1860’s – and the personalities involved\, documenting an unusual and largely forgotten episode of Nevada history.\n \nBio: Eric Moody \nI have been a resident of northern Nevada since 1968\, when I came to Reno to attend the University of Nevada. After living in Reno\, then Washoe Valley (for 25 years)\, I now reside in Sparks\, where I serve on the board of trustees of the Sparks Museum. \nFor thirty years I worked at the Nevada Historical Society in Reno\, as Curator of Manuscripts\, and then as acting Director the last two years before I retired. During this time I also taught history classes for Truckee Meadows Community College\, Western Nevada College\, Old College\, and Chapman College (now elevated to University). \nI’m presently a partner in Nevada in the West Publishing\, which produces periodicals and books about the Silver State’s fascinating past. From 2010 to 2017 I was editor of Nevada in the West magazine; I’ve since graduated to the editorial chair of the Reese River Reveille (a magazine-style revival of the pioneer Austin\, Nevada\, newspaper that began in 1863). \nI have written widely in the fields of Nevada and Western history\, with books that include a biography of Nevada governor Vail Pittman; Western Carpetbagger: The Extraordinary Memoirs of “Senator” Thomas Fitch; Flanigan: Anatomy of a Railroad Ghost Town; a study of early casino gambling in Nevada (1931-1945); and Brewed in Nevada: A History of Nevada’s Beers and Breweries (a booklet coauthored with Robert Nylen). \nThe last time I lectured at the Gold Hill Hotel was back in 1999 – almost twenty years ago.  Not wanting to wear out my welcome\, I have strategically spaced my appearances…. \nPlease see the sign up form below to make reservations for this exciting lecture!  This lecture might very well sell out!\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nName:\n\n\n\nEmail Address:\n\n\n\nDinner and Lecture or Lecture only?\n Dinner and Lecture\n Lecture only\n\n\nHow many in your party?\n\n\n\nIf you are coming to the dinner and lecture\, what time would you like to dine with us?\n 5:00 p.m.\n 5:30 p.m.\n 6:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Candace Wheeler talk on Comstock Cemeteries
DESCRIPTION:Candace Wheeler continues our lecture series tonight with a talk about the Comstock Cemeteries. \nCandace Wheeler has been the executive director for the Comstock Cemetery Foundation for nearly 20 years. She is a Historical Geographer and the subject of her thesis was the Silver Terrace cemeteries in Virginia City. Candace will provide a different perspective on our relationship with cemeteries and historic landscapes and provide a better understanding of the role of “sense of place” in their development. \nCemeteries\, studied\, analyzed\, and experienced\, touch the human senses and convey a sense of place for both the past and the present. For the Silver Terrace cemeteries the evolution from cemetery for the mourner to a tourist destination has been a 150 year\, sixty-five-acre\, human tale of interaction with a regional cemetery landscape. \nAnalyzing cemeteries plays an integral role in increasing our knowledge and understanding of the thoughts\, feelings\, ideas\, and value systems of people who interacted with the landscapes of the past. Understanding how landscapes were created and how they evolved is the story of our relationship with the land and with death. \nNovember 16th at 7:00 PM.  It will be an interesting evening!  Discover the Comstock Cemeteries!  See sign up form below: \nPlease note that we have only 50 total seats for people to see the lecture.  Due to the crazy interest in the lecture series\, and the fact that we are selling out each week\, we will have to closely monitor the sign ups for this lecture series. \nThere are 30 spots available for people attending dinner and the lecture.\nThere are 20 spots available for the lecture only.\nPriority goes to those who chose the dinner and the lecture.  \n\nDinner reservations are at: 5:00 p.m.\, 5:15\, 5:30\, 5:45\, & 6:00 p.m.  We will let you know if we will need to revise your reservation time due to diner volume.\n\nPlease use this form to sign up:\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nName:\n\n\n\nEmail Address:\n\n\n\nDinner and Lecture? DESCRIPTION:Will Furman continues the lecture series this Thursday night (October 12th) at the Gold Hill Hotel. \nWill is a photographer with a distinct eye for the serenity and magic of nature – and for echoes of the Old West.  He has pioneered what he describes as Inside-Out\, a single image technique that utilizes both the reflectivity and translucency of windows to create an image with multiple planes.  The result conjures a Bodie that was\, haunting and evocative.    “When we visit historic places\,” Will asks as he photographs\, “What did it feel like to live back then?   That feeling is what he tries to capture in each photograph. It allows the viewer to feel\, for a moment\, that they had returned to yesteryear.” \nAfter his presentation on Bodie\, Furman will talk about his new Inside-Out technique and show examples of it applied in Virginia City and other historic towns in the west. \nThere is no double exposure. No superimposition of two images\, just one press of the camera button.  The results draw the viewer into the image in a new way.  People who like ghost towns\, like this presentation.  It’s different.  The towns come alive because each person experiences each image differently. \nLast month Will Furman gave this presentation at the California State Library in Sacramento.  They have asked him to mount a photographic exhibition of Inside-Out images at the library. \nIf you want to see a new way to capture people’s interest in historic towns\, like Virginia City\, or any other historic town\, come to the Gold Hill Hotel on Thursday evening\, October 12th at 7:00 PM.  It will be an exciting evening! SUMMARY:Alan Coyner - Why is there so much gold in Nevada?
DESCRIPTION:Even though Nevada is known as “The Silver State”\, gold mining is the dominant mineral commodity produced in the state today. In 2015 Nevada produced 5.34 million ounces of gold valued at $6.19 billion. This accounted for 83% of the U.S. production and 5.5% of the world production. Only China\, Australia\, and Russia produced more gold in 2015 than the state of Nevada. Where did all this gold come from? Why did the prospectors heading to the California Gold Rush travel right past it? This lecture will answer those questions and more as we dig deep into the goldfields of Nevada. \nMr. Coyner worked as an exploration geologist for a number of mining companies during his career.  He also served as Administrator of the Division of Minerals for the State of Nevada.  He reported to the Commission on Mineral Resources and the Governor.  So who would know better about this lecture topic? \nPlease note that we have only 50 total seats for people to see the lecture. We will let you know if we will need to revise your reservation time to due to diner volume.\n\nPlease use this form to sign up:\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nName:\n\n\n\nEmail Address:\n\n\n\nDinner and Lecture? SUMMARY:Lecture series - Joe Curtis - What happened to all the Old Buildings?
DESCRIPTION:** Note from Patrick at the Gold Hill Hotel – As of 11 a.m. on Tuesday\, 7/25 – we are all sold out for this event!  ** \nJoe explains his lecture:  My parents moved to Virginia City in 1958 when they bought a building and opened a museum dedicated to the history of life on the Comstock.  I grew up amidst the museum and became infatuated (no\, fanatical) with the history of this area and began collecting all the old photos I came across for the remainder of my life….at least to this point. \nI will be presenting my personal collection of photos of what WAS there and some of what is in that place now.  Photos you have likely never seen before.  Naked buildings with all their outer wear removed.   What happened to the hundreds of buildings that were on the Comstock?  The nature of their demise.  This lecture will give you so answers.  So\, the next time you walk down the street in Virginia City you will have a whole new feel of what you would have been walking past in the 1880’s or so. \nLecture is $5.  Come for dinner and the lecture!  We are currently accepting reservations for 5 p.m.\, 5:30\, 5:45\, and 6 p.m. Email Pat with your  name\, time of reservation and number in party: pat@gold-hill-hotel-saloon-b49f0b.ingress-baronn.ewp.live \nPlease note that we have only 50 total seats for people to see the lecture. We will let you know if we will need to revise your reservation time to due to diner volume.\n\nPlease use this form to sign up:\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nName:\n\n\n\nEmail Address:\n\n\n\nDinner and Lecture?
