Such groups quickly spread to the Comstock and other mining towns. Gathered around a wood stove in the dead of winter\, they would compete amongst themselves to see who could tell the most believable and wild tale. \nHumm…maybe there is a plan for such an event on the Comstock in 2027. \n\n\nBios:  \nJoe Curtis\, was raised in Carson to about age 14\, his parents purchased buildings and opened a Comstock history museum and also dealt in the history and artifacts of Comstock life.  Joe grew up and later became the care taker of vast stores of original historical source material which he has spent spare time outside two careers researching and stuffing the information into the space between his ears.  It now has to be passed on to the future caretakers of Comstock history while he can remember to do so.  He is one of the most passionate purveyors of accurate Comstock history.  Don’t look him in the eye or he will talk history  to you till you get in your car and drive away. \nLecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $10 per person. \nCome early and enjoy dinner before the lecture! We Serve dinner before the lecture at 5\, 5:30\, & 6 p.m. \nPlease fill out this reservation form to sign up for this interesting lecture: \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nName:\n\n\n\nEmail Address:\n\n\n\nNumber of people in your party?\n\n\n\nDinner and Lecture or Lecture Only?\n Dinner and Lecture\n Lecture Only\n\n\nWhat is the time you would like to dine with us?\n 4:30 p.m.\n 5:00 p.m.\n 5:30 p.m.\n Lecture Only

Dubé on: “Depots of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad” \nDinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nLecture Description:\nDepots of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.  When one asks about Nevada’s railroad history\, immediately the Virginia & Truckee Railroad is remembered.  Beginning with its first spike driven on September 28\, 1869\, the railroad carried the ore and riches of the Comstock Lode\, the lumber and supplies to build Virginia City and its mines\, connected to the Central Pacific Railroad’s transcontinental route in Reno\, provided service to our state’s capital Carson City.  In 1906 the V&T expanded with a branch to connect and ship the agricultural wealth of the Carson Valley from Minden.  V&T’s locomotives were stars in movies\, passengers gave way to railfans and tourists\, riding the rails until its closing day on May 31\, 1950.  There is much V&T legacy that continues\, so grab a free ticket to ride and see the V&T’s depots and wayside structures as we steam down the rails of Nevada history. \nBio of Lecturer:\nJean-Guy T. DESCRIPTION:Lecture Series Continues – Thursday\, April 17th with Joe Curtis and Ron Gallagher’s –  “Business and Commerce on the Comstock 1870s to 1890s” \nWe are pleased to continue the 2025 Gold Hill Lecture Series! \nDinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nDescription:  The Comstock’s own Huxsters of History\, the VC Relic AKA Ron Gallagher and Prof. E.P. Stinkwater AKA Joe Curtis\, will present on the subject of “Business and Commerce on the Comstock 1870s to 1890s”.  A mining town can’t exist without a community to support it.  Their intention is to pass on the caretaker duties of the true and relatively accurate history of the Comstock to the next keepers thereof.  Come soak up the Comstock history stuck in their heads and become a Comstock History Caretaker. \nBios:  Ron Gallagher\, was born as a young child and raised on the Comstock.  His family worked in\, owned and operated businesses in Virginia City from the 1870’s into the 1950’s or so. Ron\, contrary to some reports which may be fake news\, did not attend the Fourth Ward School as a child.  He did\, however go to school.  A career in teaching and private industry and a passion for the history of “his” community places him in a rare position to have absorbed the history.  Ron has researched his family history along with general Comstock history for much of his adult Irish life interspersed with occasional “blarney shots”. \nJoe Curtis\, younger than Ron\, was raised in Carson to about age 14\, his parents purchased buildings and opened a Comstock history museum and also dealt in the history and artifacts of Comstock life. SUMMARY:Lecture Series Continues! Monette Bebow-Reinhard - "VC vs Bonanza" A Tale of Merging Histories
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Series Continues! – Thursday\, June 20th\, with Monette Bebow-Reinhard with “Virginia City vs Bonanza: A Tale of Merging Histories”  \nWe are pleased to continue our 2024 Lecture Series! \nDinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nBIO: \nA mother of three\, Bebow-Reinhard earned BA in 2000 / MA in 2006 in history\, and loves finding truth in mythology. After earning her master’s in history Bebow-Reinhard became obsessed with research. Once field work was done on her master’s thesis\, and following three years as curator at a copper artifact museum\, she began compiling a master database of all pre-contact copper artifacts found in the Americas (currently totaling over 90\,000). She is turning her copper database of over 85\,000 artifacts into a series of resource manuals; the first three are now available and the fourth is on the Four Corners copper and updated bell research\, also out now. She has published a major nonfiction book\, Civil War & Bloody Peace: Following Orders\, that took 20 years to pull together\, now in second edition; she queried for five years before taking the KDP publication route. Her new book is available through Rowman & Littlefield\, her first contract since 2017\, when three fiction novels were published with two different publishers; now all are available through KDP at Amazon. She’s working on several other fiction novels and one nonfiction\, and is hopeful that more contracts are in her future. She writes at bebowbooks.blog regularly and is also a commercial and stage actress. \nDescription: \nWhen Monette realized that Bonanza episodes were not shown in a historical timeline\, she wondered just how much history the series used\, and the idea was born\, not just to explore episodes\, but also to include real (and legendary) Virginia City and Nevada history. She’s hopeful she’ll be able to edit her home movies on a 1990 trip to the Ponderosa Ranch theme park\, and also that her editing skills will allow her to intro some of her Virginia City history with the accuracy of the some of the Bonanza episodes. She will be forever grateful to Joe Curtis\, Virginia City historian\, for his help with the book. \nLecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $10 per person. \nCome early and enjoy dinner before the lecture! We Serve dinner before the lecture at 4:30\, 5:00\, & 5:30 p.m. \nPlease fill out this reservation form to sign up for this exciting lecture:\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nName:\n\n\n\nEmail Address:\n\n\n\nNumber of people in your party?\n\n\n\nDinner and Lecture or Lecture Only?\n Dinner and Lecture\n Lecture Only\n\n\nWhat is the time you would like to dine with us?\n 4:30 p.m.\n 5:00 p.m.\n 5:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Special Holiday Lecture! "Christmas in Nevada" - Patricia Cafferata
DESCRIPTION:This is the last lecture of 2022!  A very special holiday lecture and a perfect way to kick off the holiday season! \nLecture/ Entertainment Series Continues! “Christmas in Nevada” by Patricia Cafferata – a lecture and book signing! \nThursday\, December 1st \nDinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m.  $10 each \nDescription: \nThe delightful and touching stories in Christmas in Nevada tell how Nevadans have celebrated the holiday\, from 1858 to the present day. Some are told by well-known Nevadans\, such as Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain)\, Robert Laxalt\, and former governors Bob List and Richard Bryan\, but much more of the book shows ordinary Nevadans celebrating in diverse ways the wonders of the season. The range of the state’s ethnic and immigrant heritage is showcased by stories of Basque\, Mexican American\, Native American\, and African American celebrations\, along with traditions of Italian\, German\, Danish\, and Serbian origin. Some of the more unusual accounts include the story of three miners trapped underground for forty-five days during the Christmas season\, Tonopah’s “Nevergreen” tree\, and Reno’s Santa Pub Crawl with thousands of costumed revelers. Through extensive research and personal interviews\, Patricia D. Cafferata has created a heartwarming collection of stories\, guaranteed to be treasured. Whether Santa arrives on a sleigh in a mining camp in Silver Peak\, Esmeralda County\, or a zip line down Fremont Street\, Las Vegas\, Christmas in Nevada brings warm memories\, excitement\, and good cheer. \nBio: \nAuthor\, historian\, and attorney\, Patty Cafferata is a life-long resident of Reno\, Nevada. Her background includes a diverse career in the law and politics. The first political office she served in was the Nevada Assembly. In 1982\, when she was elected Nevada State Treasurer\, she became the first woman elected to any constitutional office in the state. Cafferata has also served as district attorney of Lincoln\, Lander and Esmeralda counties at different times.  \nCafferata wrote and published nine books on Nevada history\, including the University of Nevada Press’ book Christmas in Nevada\, a history of how Nevadans have and continue to celebrate the holiday. SUMMARY:Lecture Series Continues! "Wicked Virginia City" by Pete Mires
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Series Continues! – Thursday\, September 15th with Pete Mires “Wicked Virginia City “ \nDinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nDescription:  Perched on the side of a mountain in the Nevada desert\, Virginia City existed for one reason only: to make money. The mining frenzy of the mid-nineteenth century uncovered veins of precious metals that would be expressed in billions today\, attracting the enterprising madam Cad Thompson\, the charismatic highwayman Nickanora and a plethora of swindlers. Miners\, flush with their wages\, supported a healthy economy of gambling\, drinking\, and prostitution and even launched a few political careers. Sam Clemens\, who became Mark Twain while reporting for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise\, called it “the livest town that America had ever produced.” Join author Peter B. Mires as he explores the seamy side of this quintessential mining boomtown. He will be selling and signing copies of his book Wicked Virginia City at the event. \nBIO:  Peter B. Mires\, a Vermont native\, first came out west in 1990 and has been fascinated with northern Nevada ever since. He received his Ph.D. in historical geography from Louisiana State University in 1988 and subsequently taught at the University of Minnesota-Duluth\, the University of Delaware\, and Western Nevada College. His publications include six books and more than fifty scholarly articles\, book reviews\, and op-ed pieces. Dr. Mires is retired and lives in Reno\, and when not reading or writing he may be found hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail or exploring the Nevada outback. \nLecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $10 per person. \nCome early and enjoy dinner before the lecture! SUMMARY:Last lecture of the year! "Beyond the Tunnel" About Adolph Sutro - by author Mark Stern
DESCRIPTION:Last lecture of the year! – Thursday\, November 21st with Mark Stern’s “Beyond the Tunnel” A book presentation & lecture about Adolph Sutro \nWe are pleased to continue the 2019 Lecture Series with the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture! \nDinner starts at 5:00 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nAdolph Sutro was famous for three things: the tunnel under the Comstock Silver Mines which bore his name; his dominance over the real property in San Francisco where he owned one twelfth of the city’s real estate; and his election as Mayor of that city. Earlier biographical treatments of Sutro concentrated upon construction of the tunnel and devoted little space to his other accomplishments. This book emphasizes the years after he had left the tunnel project and tells the story of a great entrepreneur in real estate\, entertainment and community leadership against dedicated enemies. \nBio:  Mark Abbott Stern is a mechanical engineer (Purdue University\, 1951) who spent 38 years in the aerospace business before writing his first book  – also a biography – about David Franks\, a merchant in Philadelphia during the 1700’s who supplied meals and other materials to the British Army from the French & Indian War through the Colonial period and the Revolutionary War. Since retiring from aerospace\, Stern spends a portion of each week servicing pianos in the workshop of a prominent re-builder. When he can find the time\, he enjoys playing tennis. \nLecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $5 per person. \nCome early and enjoy dinner before the lecture! SUMMARY:Lecture Series Continues! Neal Cobb with “Harold’s Club” Nevada’s Oldest Casino Remembered”
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Series Continues – Thursday\, May 16th with Neal Cobb’s “Harold’s Club” Nevada’s Oldest Casino Remembered \nWe are pleased to continue the 2019 Lecture Series with the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture! \nDinner starts at 5:00 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. \nTo a fast-buck carnival man like Raymond I. (Pappy) Smith\, it was like the ring of a silver dollar when Nevada legalized gambling back in the 1930’s.  He didn’t know much about casino games\, but he figured he couldn’t go wrong by sending his sons to Reno to set up shop with a couple of nickel slot machines and a penny roulette game. \nEven in the midst of the Great Depression\, the pioneer venture in a small room fronting North Virginia Street showed promise. \nPappy promoted “The Biggest Little City in the World” far and wide. “Harold’s Club or Bust” signs featuring the outline of a Conestoga wagon soon appeared in remote corners of the world. \nBusiness became so good that he built a seven-story tower billed as the “World’s Largest Casino.” The place had a Western theme\, and employees dressed in Western garb to complete the effect. \nThe biggest slot machine pay-out was a jackpot on which the reels showed pictures of the Smiths. The casino’s off-the-wall promotions included “mouse roulette\,’ in which the winner would be decided by a mouse crawling out of a hole and resting on a certain number. \nIt was 50 years ago this March that Harold Smith Sr. and Raymond I. Smith opened Harold’s Club\, Nevada’s oldest casino. \nBio: Neal Cobb was born in Reno in 1939. As an adult he worked in the family business Modern Photo. Worked at KNEV-FM 95.5\, Dec 25 1953 – 1980 which was Nevada’s first “Successful” FM station. \nNeal served four years with the U.S. Navy as Radioman\, later as a craps dealer at Harold’s Club\, eight years on Board of Adjustment Washoe County\, eight years Washoe County Planning Commission\, eleven years City of Reno Historical Resources Commission\, and recognized author of two books “Reno Now and Then”\, books 1 and II\, and as an integral part of the Nevada Historical Society since 1988. \nLecture starts at 7:00 p.m. and costs $5 per person. \nCome early and enjoy dinner before the lecture!
