SUMMARY:Lecture tonight! Pam Abercrombie – The History of Nevada Indian Tribes: The Numu\, Newe\, Nuwu\, and Wa She Shu
DESCRIPTION:Pamela Abercrombie continues our lecture series tonight with a talk about the History of Nevada Indian Tribes:  The Numu\, Newe\, Nuwu\, and Wa She Shu. \nPam will be giving an overview of the American Indians across the nation and the indigenous tribes of Nevada. Focus will be on the Northern Paiute\, including the lands of the Comstock and surrounding areas as far as the California/Nevada border to the west.  \nPam Abercrombie\, before coming to the Comstock\, worked on a rural Nevada Indian Tribe reservation  for about eight years. Her love for history led her down a path of research on the indigenous people of Nevada. She spent three years studying our local tribes\, in addition to federal/tribal relations and tribal nations across the United States\, learning from non cross-cultural resources; therefore gaining knowledge from the American Indian’s perspective on North America and the United States.  \n  \nDiscover the history\, interesting facts and information about the way of life of the Nevada Indians before the arrival of the white European settlers and colonists. \nPamela Abercrombie is the Executive Director of the Comstock Historical Foundation. She has developed a career in the nonprofit field the past 14 years\, serving youth and families. She began as a program coordinator for a youth-serving organization in Dayton\, transitioned to the Education Director for the Yerington Paiute Tribe where she became a self-taught administrator\, and then after earning a Master’s in Public Administration fell in love with Virginia City and tourism. SUMMARY:Lecture Tonight! The SS Central America Treasure - by Fred Holabird
DESCRIPTION:Fred Holabird continues our lecture series tonight with a talk about the SS Central America Treasure. \nThe most famous wreck of the nineteenth century was the SS Central America\, loaded with $3 million in gold from the California gold rush in 1857. \nLocated in the 1990’s by high-tech engineers at a depth of 8\,000 feet\,  a major portion was recovered. A decade of law suits followed\, culminating in the sale of the gold. Fifteen years later\, a second round was recovered\, little known to the public. \nFred Holabird has been one of the key components to the treasure story since late 1999. He worked for the Federal Court\, the Insurance companies\, and the investors to unravel mysteries of the wreck\, cargo and people on board. \nFred Holabird is a mining geologist (64). He spent the first half of his career in exploration and production of precious metals here in Nevada\, managing two open pit gold companies. He created Holabird’s Western Americana\, specializing in Mining in America\, in 1983 as a second business. Today it is the largest auction company of Western Americana in the United States. Holabird remains very active in the mining business\, consulting on production\, management and environmental issues regularly. \nNovember 9th at 7:00 PM.  It will be an interesting evening!  Discover the little known facts.  See sign up form below: \nPlease note that we have only 50 total seats for people to see the lecture.  Due to the crazy interest in the lecture series\, and the fact that we are selling out each week\, we will have to closely monitor the sign ups for this lecture series. \nThere are 30 spots available for people attending dinner and the lecture.\nThere are 20 spots available for the lecture only.\nPriority goes to those who chose the dinner and the lecture.  \n\nDinner reservations are at: 5:00 p.m.\, 5:15\, 5:30\, 5:45\, & 6:00 p.m.  We will let you know if we will need to revise your reservation time due to diner volume.\n\nPlease use this form to sign up:\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nName:\n\n\n\nEmail Address:\n\n\n\nDinner and Lecture? SUMMARY:Candace Wheeler talk on Comstock Cemeteries
DESCRIPTION:Candace Wheeler continues our lecture series tonight with a talk about the Comstock Cemeteries. \nCandace Wheeler has been the executive director for the Comstock Cemetery Foundation for nearly 20 years. She is a Historical Geographer and the subject of her thesis was the Silver Terrace cemeteries in Virginia City. Candace will provide a different perspective on our relationship with cemeteries and historic landscapes and provide a better understanding of the role of “sense of place” in their development. \nCemeteries\, studied\, analyzed\, and experienced\, touch the human senses and convey a sense of place for both the past and the present. For the Silver Terrace cemeteries the evolution from cemetery for the mourner to a tourist destination has been a 150 year\, sixty-five-acre\, human tale of interaction with a regional cemetery landscape. \nAnalyzing cemeteries plays an integral role in increasing our knowledge and understanding of the thoughts\, feelings\, ideas\, and value systems of people who interacted with the landscapes of the past. Understanding how landscapes were created and how they evolved is the story of our relationship with the land and with death. \nNovember 16th at 7:00 PM.  It will be an interesting evening!  Discover the Comstock Cemeteries!
