Lecture Series Continues – Thursday, June 1st with David & Gayle Woodruff’s Chautauqua performance – “James Reed and his wife Margret, Organizers and Survivors of the 1846 Donner Party”
We are pleased to continue the 2023 Lecture Series at the Historic Gold Hill Hotel!
Dinner starts at 4:30 p.m. and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m.
James Reed and his wife Margret. Survivors and original organizers of the Donner Party of 1846. George led efforts through the severe winter of 1846-47 to rescue his family and many others in his party. Margret, with sheer strength, determination and bravery, kept their children alive and hopeful in James’s absence. This story also relives the heroic efforts of complete strangers and severely injured Donner Party members, who risked their own lives to save others. A very compelling and “edge of your seat” story.
David & Gayle Woodruff are the authors of several books on Eastern Sierra history and are also Chautauqua/living history performers.
For the past 18 months, they have presented one of their history programs every weekend at Wylder Resort Hope Valley (formerly Sorenson’s Resort) about 20 minutes south of Lake Tahoe. They also give history presentations for museums, historical societies, social groups, and an assortment of other organizations. In addition to their weekly programs, the Woodruff’s have given dozens of history programs for other groups including the Tallac Historic Site-Valhalla, the Tahoe Lakefront Owners Association, Lake Tahoe Historical Society, California State Parks-Donner Memorial, Death Valley National Park and many more (and Artown this July!). David and Gayle have drawn as many as 200+ people to their programs. Together they have been giving history presentations for over 25-years.
